Hawkin's Bazaar shut in Bury St Edmunds as shop calls in administrators

Bank Holiday Monday and Bury St Edmunds was pretty packed for the end of the Christmas sales - but one shop was noticable by its closed doors.

Toy and novelty gift chain Hawkin's Bazaar on the Cornhill closed just before the new year as it has gone into administration.
Today curious shoppers were greeted by a simple note on the door which said the chain, owened by The Tobar Group had called in the adminstrators.
Reports say The Tobar Group employs 380 staff across a network of 65 stores and also sells online and over the phone.
"In common with many retailers the group has experienced exceptionally challenging trading conditions of late," said Peter Saville of joint administrators Zolfo Cooper.
The administrators said they would be working to try and protect jobs.
Hawkin's Bazaar customers owning gift vouchers may still exchange these for goods.
The company is not publicly listed but has a reported turnover of about £60m.

A sad sight to see. I hope that something can be done to save this shop which is loved by children.

Reportanother empty store on the cornhill , and awful for the staff at the beginning of the new year ... that part of the cornhill is in dire need of some tlc , with both the officers club and former next looking neglected .. the former Burton store along the road also leaves a noticeable gap .. Bury is suffering the same as other large towns with rising vacancies .
