When Zumba®, which combines Latin and International music with a workout, launched last year Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre had no idea that the fitness craze would become so popular. Within weeks all of its Zumba® classes were full with a waiting list. More than 150 people take part in Zumba® every week in Bury in six classes, including a new class on the Moreton Hall estate at Abbotts Green Primary School on Tuesday nights.
Now the latest craze Zumba Aqua® has just been launched at the Centre's swimming pool and staff are expecting it to be just as popular.
Ronnie Farmer, Assistant Fitness Manager, said: "We have been astounded by the numbers of people who wanted to take part in Zumba® and those numbers have continued to hold in our classes.
"Now Zumba Aqua® has been launched we expect the classes to be just as popular with members. It is more challenging than Zumba in some ways and definitely more so than the normal aqua fitness as you do movements against the resistance of water. The movements are challenging and you can really feel the muscles working."
Zumba Aqua® integrates the Zumba formula and philosophy into traditional aqua fitness. Participants move their bodies for 45 or 60 minutes against the resistance of water to Latin dance rhythms. It is used for cardio-conditioning and body-toning.
Classes are every Wednesday at 7.45pm. Classes cost £5.50 and are free for Abbeycroft members
