Liberal Democats were the big losers in Thursday’s elections nationally and the same is true in Bury St Edmunds.

The counting in the district, town and parish elections took place today and while the full picture has yet to emerge, it looks so far like the Lib Dems are struggling in the area around Bury St Edmunds.

The Bury Free Press has reported that Bury St Edmunds town council has been won by Labour. Of the 17 seats Labour are certain at least nine unopposed.

In St Edmunsdbury so far, the Tories have picked up 23 of 45 seats, Labour have two and two have been won by Independents.

It has been reported that Paul Hopfensperger has been elected to the borough after two decades of trying in St Olave’s at the expense of Green candidate Mark Ereira-Guyer.

In the Abbeygate ward, Paul Farmer and Richard Routs stayed in for the Tories, fending off 18-year-old Labour candidate Tina Ross.
