Street lights in Bury St Edmunds and the rest of Suffolk may soon be switched off in the early hours of the morning as a cost cutting measure. Have a look at the report http://tinyurl.com/22wg4hw
Do you think it is a good idea or do you think it could lead to more crime on the streets of Bury St Edmunds?
This and other cost cutting measures will be discussed by Suffolk County Council today.

I can just imaging lots of drunks stumbling home from Brazillias in Bury St Edmunds banging into each other.
Wonder what other AMAZING ideas Suffolk CC have come up with?

I think thats dangerous and irresponsible. People travel at all hours. Would you want to be responsible for allowing people to walk in the dark?

How about making companies and businesses TURN OFF their lights during closed hours? SO MANY shops and big buildings leave many lights on for night time advertisement purposes. Its REALLY bad in big cities but it happens everywhere. Its a disgusting waste of electricity.

Agree. If you can't walk on a path by moonlight without lurching aimlessly into the road then you don't deserve legs. Save money, save electricity, save the planet. Win, win, win.

Well, I've just noticed that Moreton Hall is now in total darkness. Went for a stroll to see the effect on the estate and it was actually quite creepy, would never want to return home on a Friday night by foot.
@Dzzzz Moonlight?? How often do you come across a clear enough sky to see the moon? What about bad weather conditions? Walking paths where trees hide the sky for hundreds of yards? A great example would be the bridge that crosses the A14 (near Bury Bowl), where you're surrounded by trees for a good 15 minutes. Let's see how long you stick by your words when you or a loved one is mugged the next night.

that bit by the A14 is creepy enough as it is, let alone without the lights on!

@xsuperstarxx Couldn't agree more. If winter this year is going to be anything like last, and the council are still set on keeping those lights off, we're in deep trouble. Here's a little factor I bet they never took into account... What about emergency vehicles trying to get into housing estates as fast as possible? Someone might argue, "well they've got headlights, and a loud enough siren". News flash people, no driver can see everything that's in front of them. And with icy roads and heavy snow, accidents upon accidents are waiting to happen. All for the sake of saving money, when all the shop advertisements up town are lit up like a tree*.
*A pun based on another article here on this website, 'Outrage over darkness in Moreton Hall'.
