Bury St Edmunds motorists facing big hike in petrol prices

It’s back to work for many people tomorrow, but motorists filling up their cars in Bury St Edmunds were today already feeling the increase in petrol prices.

The price of petrol is being pushed up by the January 1 fuel duty increase and the 2.5 per cent rise in VAT which kicks in tomorrow.

The cheapest petrol on offer in town could be over 130.9p for a litre of unleaded by tomorrow – a year ago the average price for a litre was around 107.9p.

All eyes for us, though, are on the BP garage on Out Westgate. This garage has continuously set its petrol price at around five pence higher than the rest of the town – at the end of September is was charging 118.9 pence for a litre of unleaded and 119.9 pence for a litre of diesel. Already this morning their prices are at 129.9 pence for a litre of unleaded and 133.9p for a litre of diesel.

While the combined price increase which equates to around five per cent in total will hit hard, it is likely that supermarkets such as Tesco and Asda will spark a price war, using petrol prices as a loss leader to get shoppers in their stores in January.

What do you think of the rise in petrol prices? Are you being forced to rethink how often you use your car due to the rise? Let us know.

Eeek - petrol at this garage is now 136.9p a litre of unleaded and 140.9p for a litre of diesel. It's gone up by 18p a litre in 4 months. At that rate we'll be paying 154.9p a litre in early July - and 172.9p a litre by November.

I do not understand why BP charge so much for their petrol - are they trying to recoup the money for the oil diaster in the US???? I do not understand why people use this station when other supermarkets are far more competitive and you can collect points at either Tesco or Sainsburys.
