First it was petrol prices shooting up and now car parking prices are set to rise in and around Bury St Edmunds.

The biggest rise could be seen at the Cattle Market car park at the back of the arc which could rise by around 20 per cent.

These proposals will be heard in a meeting on Wednesday at the borough council, who are keen to maximise the return coming into their coffers from parking.

In the meeting the council will suggest rising the charge for an hour’s stay from £1.50 to £1.80 and the price for up to four hours stay from £3 to £3.50.

Other car parks in the town, such as St Andrews and Ram Meadow will see slight increases too.

What do you think about raising parking prices in Bury? Do you know anywhere that’s great to park if you’re nipping into town or even better, somewhere you can park for free?

With parking prices and public transport prices so high it is SO much cheaper just to walk or bike.

Monday, April 4 is the date that prices rise in car parks around town - prices on Angel Hill, for example, will rise from £1.20 for up to 30 minutes to £1.30, from £1.60 to £2 for an hour and from £2.70 from £3 for up to 2 hours. Not huge changes, but there are bigger differences for paying parking tickets. Currently it's £20 if paid within 7 days and £50 after. Charges will be £30 within 14 days and £70 after.

Don't even get me started on that one! I too live close enough to town to walk in - lucky me! - you might think! Yes, I love the ease of walking to work and into town to run errands and get my weekly vegetables from the market etc. However, if I ever decide to use our car to go out to the supermarket to get any other supplies it's anything but easy when I return home with a car full of groceries and a sleeping toddler all of which I have to struggle to get back to the house safely and in one trip because I can't just pull up outside my house, why you may wonder!? It's because someone who is incredibly selfish and only thinking about what they can get for free every day has parked outside a house to walk into work! And not only the odd person, everyone! We are a one car household and it's easier for my husband the car to work every day than cycle in because if I have it at home and use it, there's nowhere for me to put it when we get back! A permit may be the answer for us, however that wouldn't stop pub users who shockingly drive to the pub of an evening and if the car park is too busy they will just park outside people's front doors rather than park on a road where all of the houses that are there have driveways! We would be paying for a permit and still not be able to park! Also, you could argue that we already pay for the privilege of parking in town conidering our council tax band! I agree it's good if you can find a road out of town to park on and take a bit of extra exercise, but not at the cost of other people. And it is quite obvious even to ignorant people that if you park outside a town house with their front door on pavement, there is nowhere else for the resident of that house to park!

Great! Send them all down Eastgate Street! I live nearby and have to pay for a permit every year for the one hour a day when you can't park in this area. The only value for money is laughing when all the cheapskates who can't be bothered to use Ram Meadow forget and end up with parking tickets.
